Rupture and repair log
Identify alliance ruptures, classify them, and record the repair attempt and its outcome.
How this document is used well
Ruptures are ordinary. Safran and Muran distinguish withdrawal ruptures (moving away — compliance, vagueness, intellectualising, sudden agreeableness) from confrontation ruptures (moving against — complaint, contempt, challenge). Withdrawal is the more dangerous of the two precisely because it feels like a good session.
| Stage of repair | What the therapist does |
|---|---|
| Notice | Attend to the marker; name your own felt shift as data |
| Disembed | Step out of the enactment rather than continuing to play your part |
| Invite | Explicitly raise it: "something changed between us just then" |
| Tolerate | Survive the patient’s anger or withdrawal without retaliating or collapsing |
| Validate the kernel | Find and acknowledge what is accurate in the complaint — there almost always is something |
| Explore | Link to the wider pattern only after the immediate rupture has been met |
