Alcohol Use Disorders Identification Test — Consumption
Three-item screen for hazardous drinking and probable alcohol use disorder.
Complete it
Thinking about the past year.
How often do you have a drink containing alcohol? (0 = never · 1 = monthly or less · 2 = 2–4×/month · 3 = 2–3×/week · 4 = 4+×/week)
How many standard drinks do you have on a typical day when you are drinking? (0 = 1–2 · 1 = 3–4 · 2 = 5–6 · 3 = 7–9 · 4 = 10+)
How often do you have six or more drinks on one occasion? (0 = never · 1 = less than monthly · 2 = monthly · 3 = weekly · 4 = daily or almost daily)
Psychometrics
Cut-points of 4 for men and 3 for women are the conventional thresholds, with sensitivity typically 0.85–0.95 for heavy drinking. Higher thresholds improve specificity where prevalence is low.
Cautions and misuse
Self-report under-estimates consumption, especially where disclosure carries consequences. Ask about quantity in standard drinks and about the heaviest recent day rather than about "usual" use.
