Alcohol Use Disorders Identification Test — Consumption

Psychometrics

Three items, drawn from the first three of the full ten-item AUDIT, covering frequency of drinking, typical quantity per drinking day, and frequency of heavy episodic drinking. Each is scored 0–4, for a range of 0–12.

Cut-points of 4 for men and 3 for women are the conventional thresholds, with sensitivity typically 0.85–0.95 for heavy drinking. Higher thresholds improve specificity where prevalence is low. A score of 8 or more on AUDIT-C indicates high risk and probable dependence, and warrants full assessment.

Cautions and misuse

Self-report under-estimates consumption, especially where disclosure carries consequences. Ask about quantity in standard drinks and about the heaviest recent day rather than about "usual" use.
