Outcome Rating Scale & Session Rating Scale
Four-item visual analogue scales for outcome and for alliance, designed to be completed in under a minute so that measurement actually happens.
Psychometrics
The ORS and SRS trade psychometric precision for feasibility, on the argument that a brief measure used every session beats a precise measure used never. They underpin the Partners for Change Outcome Management System, which has randomised support for improved outcomes and reduced dropout.
Cautions and misuse
Four items cannot capture much. Their justification is entirely pragmatic — and the pragmatic case is strong, because completion rates for longer instruments in routine practice are poor.
